| Where it all began
Newport News Industrial (NNI) is an outgrowth of the Eastern Idaho Construction Company, which was formed to build the Navy's first prototype nuclear-powered surface ship propulsion unit in Idaho. It was first incorporated in 1965 as the Nuclear Engineering and Construction Company, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newport News Shipbuilding, serving non-ship related commercial markets. The name was changed to the Nuclear Service and Construction Company in 1966, better reflecting the core business of servicing nuclear reactor plants. In 1973, the company adopted its current name, expanding its services to non-nuclear industries. Newport News Industrial Corporation is a subsidiary of Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company.
